Comal County reports a fox tested positive for rabies

Comal County confirms 18th rabies case as a fox tests positive in Bulverde.

COMAL COUNTY, Texas — Comal County reported Thursday that a fox tested positive for the rabies virus.

Officials say the animal was found in the area of Raven Lake in Bulverde and had contact with a cat. The fox with rabies marks the 18th confirmed case of rabies in Comal County this year.

There are only two other counties in Texas that have reported more rabies cases this year than Comal, according to Texas Department of Health and Human Services.

County officials are warning residents to avoid contact with foxes, skunks and other wildlife, especially if they are behaving strangely. Pet owners are also urged to get their pets vaccinated against rabies. A person or animal can get rabies when bitten or if the animal’s saliva comes in contact with the eyes, nose, mouth or an open wound.

If bitten, scratched, or otherwise exposed to an animal, immediately wash the affected area with soap and water and seek medical attention.

If you spot anything strange or unusual, please contact Comal County Animal Control at 830-608-2016.
