Commemorate Black History Month in San Antonio

Celebrate meaningfully this month as the Alamo City reflects on the legacy of Black heritage and its influence on American history.

SAN ANTONIO — February marks Black History Month, a time for reflection, education and a nationwide celebration of the contributions and legacy of African American culture.

There is no shortage of opportunities for San Antonians to celebrate the month in a meaningful way. Here are some events you can take part in.

Monthly Black History Series 2025

Hosted by Melaneyes Media on the first Tuesday of the month, this free educational event explores the enduring legacy of the Black experience through presentations and engaging discussions that highlight the achievements that shaped history. This month’s session is titled “The Origin of Black History” and is the first in the series that continues through 2025.

When: February 4 at 6 p.m.

Where: Carver Library (3350 E Commerce Street)

Honoring Black Voices exhibit

San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum (SAAACAM) hosts the Honoring Black Voices of San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country exhibit at the Patrick Heath Public Library in Boerne. The event highlights the groups and involvement of African Americans in the city and around Kendall, Kerr and Gillespie Counties. 

When: February 7 at  8 a.m. – February 21 at 5 p.m.

SAAACAM Black History Film Series

Catch a screening of “Miles of Smiles” followed by a lively panel discussion at the Carver Community Cultural Center. The film explores the role of the Pullman porters as the lowest rank service workers on the luxurious sleeping car train system despite their high status in the Black community. Admission to the screening is free but registration is required.

When: February 7 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

SAPL 2025 Black History Month Film Series

The San Antonio Public Libraries invites you to several screenings happening throughout the month at various branch locations that highlight the work of Black directors and their contributions to filmmaking.

Black History River Tour

Take part in a 100-minute cruise through the heart of San Antonio along the River Walk as you learn all about African American influence in the city. There are two opportunities in February while the boat tours continue into the month of March. Get your tickets before they sell out.

When: February 8 and February 15 (tours depart at 8:45 a.m. and end at 11 a.m.)

Black Cowboys exhibit at the Witte

Travel back in time as you learn about the legacy of Black cowboys in the American West. Black Cowboys: An American Story explores artifacts, photographs and documents showcasing the stories of resilience by real Black cowboys who overcame great odds in the face of discrimination. 

When: Exhibit on view through February 9

Where: Witte Museum (3801 Broadway)

Black History Month Art Market

SAAACAM also hosts the second annual Black History Month Art Market at the Historic La Villita later this month. Attendees can shop from local Black artists and vendors. The event also features a community painting project, games, poetry readings, music, children’s story time, engaging community discussions and more. This year’s theme is “African Americans and Labor.”

When: February 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
