Congregation celebrates return to renewed downtown SA church that suffered roof collapse in 2019

There is still renovations underway but church officials say everything should be completely done in May where they are expected to have a big celebration.

SAN ANTONIO — Home Sweet Home. The faithful are back worshiping at Travis Park United Methodist Church.

The church has been undergoing major renovations after storm damage five years ago. After several months of being away, on Sunday, they had their first service back in the sanctuary.

Senior Pastor Cynthia Engstrom said simply, it felt great.

“As time went on we started to get a little home sick,” Engstrom said. “It started getting a little heavy and we just missed being in this place.”

In October, KENS 5 went inside the sanctuary to see the work underway. At the time, scaffolding was taking up every inch of the place of worship. Months later, most of the work is complete.

As for Sunday’s service, Engstrom said it felt like a homecoming for everybody.

“When people stood to sing the sound was full,” she said. “We got to hear the pipe organ again. The concert grand played. The band played. The bells played. It was a good day.”

There are still areas of the sanctuary still being worked on, like chandeliers still have to be installed. The church’s sound system, which will be state of the art is also getting worked on. Its stained glass windows is another project.

Despite all the uncompleted work, there is still no place like home.

“The mission of the church is to draw people together in love,” Engstrom said.

There is other work happening  around the church as well like the roof and the exterior of the church.  As for the sanctuary, Rev. Engstrom said everything should be completely done in May where they are expected to have a big celebration.
