Congresswoman announces Selena commemorative coin to honor Queen of Tejano legacy

Selena rose to fame in the 1990’s and would have been 54 on April 16, 2025.

SAN ANTONIO — A new commemorative coin was introduced in honor of the Queen of Tejano music, Selena Quintanilla.

Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz announced the Selena Commemorative Coin Act in celebration of April 16, also known as “Selena Day.”

This act means the United States Mint will issue a commemorative coin that recognizes Selena’s legacy as a South Texas icon and the Queen of Tejano music.

“Selena Quintanilla-Pérez is remembered as “The Queen of Tejano” for her passion, talent, and music that changed the industry forever. Selena inspired millions by elevating Tejano music to the mainstream and shattering glass ceilings. Honoring her with a coin is more than symbolic, it’s a step forward in recognizing her contributions to American history and keeping her memory alive for generations,” De La Cruz said in a press release.

Selena rose to fame in the 1990’s and would have been 54 on April 16, 2025. Her album “Amor Prohibido” and the post-humous release of “Dreaming of You” broke records and ultimately elevated Tejano music.

On the cusp of breaking into the mainstream of pop music, she was murdered by a former friend and confidant.

“Though her life was tragically cut short at the age of 23, her legacy continues to thrive through generations of fans, a Grammy Award, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and countless tributes,” De La Cruz said in the press release.
