SAN ANTONIO — The Texas Department of Transportation has begun construction on the US 90 Expansion Project in west Bexar County, a major effort aimed at easing congestion and improving safety along one of the area’s busiest corridors.
The project spans 7.6 miles from Loop 410 to SH 211 and is part of TxDOT’s Texas Clear Lanes initiative. Once complete, US 90 will be widened from a four-lane divided highway to a six-lane expressway, with continuous frontage roads added.
Planned upgrades include a flyover ramp connecting westbound US 90 to northbound Loop 1604, intersection improvements at Loop 1604, Montgomery Road and Hunt Lane, new turnaround bridges, and a roundabout at Ray Ellison Boulevard and Hunt Lane. Sidewalks, shoulders, and auxiliary lanes are also included.
“The US 90 Expansion is more than a construction project — it’s an investment in San Antonio’s future,” said TxDOT San Antonio District Engineer Charles Benavidez.
TxDOT says traffic along the corridor is expected to more than double by 2045. Without improvements, commute times could reach 70 minutes. With the expansion, officials estimate travel times could be reduced by as much as 90%.
The $473 million project will be built in two phases. Phase I, from Loop 410 to Loop 1604, is already underway and expected to wrap up by 2030. Phase II, from Loop 1604 to SH 211, is scheduled to begin in 2027 and finish by 2031. The contractor for Phase I is Jordan Foster Construction.
