Copperas Cove police officer killed in shooting, Texas Rangers leading investigation

The suspect accused of fatally shooting a Copperas Cove police officer later took his own life, according to Texas DPS.

COPPERAS COVE, Texas — The Texas Rangers are investigating an officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a Copperas Cove police officer, according to Sgt. Bryan Washko with the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The Copperas Cove Police Department identified the officer as Elijah Garretson.

No details about what led to the shooting were released, but according to Washko the suspect killed himself after a long negotiation with law enforcement.

“As we begin to navigate this incredibly difficult time, we ask for understanding and patience as our department, Officer Garretson’s family, and our law enforcement family grieve this loss,” CCPD said in a statement. “Out of respect for all those affected and the ongoing investigation, no further information is being released at this time.”

No further information was immediately available.

Police departments from around Central Texas offered their condolences in posts to their Facebook pages.

Killeen Police Department:
