The Durant-Spurs trade rumors persist, with a report indicating that the Suns are seeking a substantial offer from San Antonio.
SAN ANTONIO — According to a report via Marc Stein, the San Antonio Spurs are adding former NBA big man Corliss Williamson to the assistant coaching ranks.
Williamson spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach for the Timberwolves and joins a new-look Spurs bench, with new head coach Mitch Johnson.
He played in the NBA from 1995 to 2007, winning the 2004 NBA Championship and the 2005 NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award.
DURANT WANTS TO LAND IN SA?
According to a report via The Athletic, Suns’ Kevin Durant’s preferred next NBA stop would be the Spurs, if traded.
“[T]he Timberwolves were made aware that he prefers to play elsewhere – specifically, league sources say, the Spurs,” The Athletic reports.
However, The Athletic also reports that the Spurs are being “conservative” in their chase for Durant.
The next NBA home for Durant has been a hot topic this offseason, and a recent report from ESPN’s Shams Charania names the San Antonio Spurs as a possible landing spot, among other teams.
Durant, 36, has one year left on his deal ($54.7 million). He averaged 26.6 points, along with 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists, in 62 games last year, and was named an All-Star, demonstrating his impact as a player despite his relatively young age.
If he is traded, ESPN reports that Durant will be eligible to sign a two-year contract extension on July 6, worth approximately $112 million. Should he wait six months after a trade, he could sign a two-year extension worth nearly $124 million.
What trade package might San Antonio send to the Suns? Names like Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, and Keldon Johnson are the likely candidates to get traded, as are any of the Spurs draft picks, including this summer’s No. 14 pick at the 2025 NBA Draft.
However, according to Kirk Goldsberry (who used to work with the Spurs), the Suns are seeking a steep price for Durant which included the Spurs’ No. 2 pick in the NBA Draft 2025 and/or Stephon Castle in their original talks.
