A Jefferson County grand jury indicted 38-year-old Brian S. Mandel on Monday on six counts of second-degree terroristic threatening and one count of criminal attempt theft by extortion over $10,000. According to the indictments, the threats were made on Nov. 8 and Nov. 9 and were directed at Brohm, his wife, Jennifer, their son, Brady, and a juvenile identified by initials. The documents also allege Mandel attempted to obtain more than $10,000 “by threatening to inflict bodily injury.”

In a statement to 3NEWS, University of Louisville President John R. Karman III said Mandel made the threats through text messages. Karman said Mandel lives in Corpus Christi.

According to a family spokesperson, Mandel travelled to Louisville on Tuesday evening to meet with the University Police to resolve the issue.

Karman said Mandel was arrested by University Police Tuesday evening.

Corpus Christi city councilmembers Roland Barrera and Eric Cantu said Thursday that planning commissioner Brian Mandel is entitled to due process following his indictment in Louisville on multiple felony charges. Both councilors told 3NEWS that any action by the city would be premature while the legal case plays out. City Manager Peter Zanoni added that the Planning Commission is appointed by the City Council, and it will be up to councilmembers to decide whether they want to take a formal position on Mandel’s status.

WHAS11, an ABC affiliate in Louisville, reported that the threats also included Brohm’s brother and offensive coordinator Brian Brohm, and that they came after Louisville’s overtime loss to California.

WHAS11 additionally reported that Louisville quarterback Miller Moss was also among those threatened.

Court records provided to 3NEWS show Mandel appeared in Jefferson Circuit Court for arraignment Wednesday. His next court date is scheduled for Feb. 17, 2026.

According to the City of Corpus Christi’s boards and commissions records, Brian S. Mandel is currently serving as vice chair of the city’s Planning Commission. The city lists Mandel as being in his second term on the commission, with his appointment running from July 21, 2020, through July 31, 2026.

The content of the text messages has not been released.

Louisville is scheduled to travel to Texas next week, facing SMU in Dallas on Nov. 22.
