Councilmember pushes to lower speed limits near schools, parks and community centers

On Tuesday afternoon, the plan will go before the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for discussion.

SAN ANTONIO — A proposal to lower speed limits in more parts of the city is gaining traction at City Hall. On Tuesday afternoon, the plan will go before the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for discussion.

Right now, the city’s default speed limit is 30 mph, but District 7 Councilwoman Marina Alderete Gavito wants to reduce it to 25 mph on neighborhood streets within a quarter-mile of schools, community centers and parks. She says lowering speeds in these high-activity areas would increase safety for children, families and pedestrians.

If approved, the city would need to fund and install new signage — a process that could take time. Before any changes are made, staff would identify priority locations, conduct traffic studies and notify nearby residents about the reduced limits.

The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee meets at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
