Cowboys trading for backup quarterback, report says

Dallas has traded for Dak Prescott’s backup quarterback, according to ESPN Insider Adam Schefter.

DALLAS — The Dallas Cowboys have traded for New England Patriots quarterback Joe Milton III, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter.

Dallas sent New England their compensatory fifth-round pick for Milton and a seventh rounder in return, Schefter reported.

With the addition of Milton, he joins the quarterback room to back up Dak Prescott after the Cowboys let Cooper Rush walk. Rush signed a deal with the Baltimore Ravens last month as a free agent.

The Patriots selected Milton in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Milton was the third-string quarterback for New England, behind starter Drake Maye and backup Jacoby Brissett. Milton appeared in one game – a Week 18 23-16 win over the Buffalo Bills – where he completed 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown.

Milton has been revered for his stature and arm strength. Despite his “arm talent,” Milton’s knock among experts has been a lack of timing, accuracy and touch.

Trey Lance, the Cowboys’ third-string quarterback the past two seasons, is still a free agent.
