Critical fire weather conditions expected for south-central Texas Wednesday | Weather Impact Alert

The KENS 5 Weather Team issues an alert for Oct. 29 due to strong winds and dry conditions.

SAN ANTONIO — Texans in the south-central part of the state should expect critical to near critical fire weather conditions Wednesday.

The KENS 5 Weather Team has issued Impact Weather Alert Days on Oct. 29 due to a Fire Weather Watch, which was upgraded to either a Red Flag Warning or Fire Danger Statement. A Weather Impact Alert Day was also issued for Oct. 30 because low temperatures are expected to be in the 40s Thursday morning.

A Fire Weather Watch is different from a Red Flag Warning: A Fire Weather Watch is issued when critical fire weather condition are possible and a Red Flag Warning is issued when critical fire weather conditions are happening or are about to happen. The Red Flag Warning will go into effect 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Tuesday afternoon, a cold front will be moving across the area with strong winds and dry air behind it. A Wind Advisory was issued Tuesday for most of the area through 7 p.m. Wednesday evening. Winds are expected at 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph through Wednesday afternoon along with humidity values between 15-20%. NWS urges residents to secure loose objects and be aware of any difficulty while driving.

With recent rains, fuel moisture remains normal or above normal, but extremely dry conditions Wednesday in combination with gusty winds and low humidity will lead to fires being harder to control. NWS encourages residents to avoid any outside activities that could cause wildfires like outdoor burning, vehicles on dry grass and smoking.
