Crystal City ISD officials warn of ‘imminent financial collapse’ with less than $500 remaining

In a letter sent to families last week, Crystal City ISD said it spent more than $10.5 million in reserve funds over the past five years.

SAN ANTONIO — Crystal City ISD is facing what district leaders describe as an “imminent financial collapse,” with the district’s interim superintendent telling families there is now less than $500 left to work with financially.

During a town hall meeting Tuesday night, interim superintendent Richard Grill told parents and community members, “That’s how broke the school district is.”

The announcement comes days after the district revealed plans to lay off 72 employees as officials work to address the growing financial crisis.

District leaders are also considering additional cost-cutting measures, including consolidating all three elementary schools into a single campus.

In a letter sent to families last week, Crystal City ISD said it spent more than $10.5 million in reserve funds over the past five years.

School officials have not yet announced when final decisions on layoffs or campus consolidation could be made.
