Sorensen has previously worked with the Cowboys’ new head coach Brian Schottenheimer.
DALLAS — The Dallas Cowboys made another hire official Tuesday after announcing that former San Francisco defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen will be their new special teams coordinator, WFAA Sports Anchor Joe Trahan confirmed.
This hire is the second under the Cowboys’ new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. The team announced earlier Tuesday that it hired Matt Eberflus as defensive coordinator.
Sorensen, who is taking over for John “Bones” Fassel, was fired from the 49ers organization in early January after leading the defense for just one season, which resulted in a disappointing 6-11 record for the Super Bowl runner-ups.
Trahan notes that Sorensen is familiar with Schottenheimer, as both had stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Seattle Seahawks. Notably, Sorensen has had a lot of experience working with defensive backs as a secondary coach and assistant. However, he’s only led an entire special teams unit for one season.
Schottenheimer and the Cowboys are still in need of an offensive coordinator and a handful of assistants to fill in gaps left by those who departed — gaps that they would like to have filled sooner rather than later.
