Dallas ICE shooting claims second victim, family left searching for answers

Family confirms Miguel Ángel García-Hernández has died after the Dallas ICE shooting. His wife is pregnant with their fifth child and seeking answers.

DALLAS, Texas — A second detainee wounded in last week’s shooting at a Dallas ICE facility has died.

Family members confirm 32-year-old Miguel Ángel García-Hernández had been on life support for nearly a week before succumbing to his injuries early Tuesday. The attack also claimed the life of 37-year-old Norlan Guzmán-Fuentes.

García-Hernández was the primary breadwinner for his family. He leaves behind four children, with a fifth expected soon. His wife, Stephany Gauffeny, told WFAA on Saturday that she believed the attack should never have happened.

“Definitely shouldn’t have happened under their custody,” Gauffeny said.

Eric Cedillo, who is representing Gauffeny and serves as a national legal advisor for LULAC, said the family is demanding answers.

“How this could happen, what protocols were in place with respect to safety, certainly,” Cedillo said.

The ICE office in Dallas reopened Tuesday, serving both appointments and walk-ins. People could be seen making their way inside, paperwork in hand. Homeland Security police cruisers were stationed in the parking lot after federal officials said they were working to harden facilities across the country.

In a statement provided to LULAC, Gauffeny described her husband as “a good man, a loving father, and the provider for our family. His death is a senseless tragedy that has left our family shattered. I do not know how to explain to our children that their father is gone.”
