DALLAS — A Dallas Mavericks player was arrested over the weekend after marijuana was found in his bag, arrest records show.
As first reported by our content partners at DLLS Sports, Mavs backup point guard Brandon Williams was arrested Saturday by DFW Airport authorities and charged with possession of marijuana.
According to an arrest record, Williams attempted to go through TSA at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport when personnel located a black container in his bag that contained 1.585 ounces of marijuana. Williams told authorities that his manager had packed his bag, according to the document.
Officers arrested Williams around 10:02 a.m. and charged him with possession of marijuana, and he was taken to jail without incident, the record states.
Since his arrest, Williams has been listed as out in the injury reports for the last two games for “personal reasons.” He remains questionable for Wednesday’s game against the Indiana Pacers.
Williams played one season at the University of Arizona and, after going undrafted, bounced around between G League teams before landing in Dallas in 2023. After two seasons on a two-way contract, the Mavericks signed Williams to a multi-year deal in 2025.
With Kyrie Irving out for half of the season and Dante Exum sidelined, Williams was expected to contribute as a backup point guard this season.
Under the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement with the players’ union, marijuana is no longer part of the NBA’s drug testing program. That is a shift from the league’s original stance, mandating treatment, fines and even suspensions if THC was found in players’ systems.
Last season, Williams helped contribute 8.3 points, 2.3 assists and 1.8 rebounds per game as the Mavericks grappled with an onslaught of injuries. This season, Williams has only played 19 minutes for the Mavs, in which he has gone 0-3 from the floor.
WFAA has reached out to the Dallas Mavericks for comment but has not heard back.
