Darwin, a Shepherd mix, awaits adoption after two years | Forgotten Friends

He has mastered the agility course at ADL and already knows how to sit, stay and spin!

SAN ANTONIO — Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week, we meet a two-year old Shepherd mix named Darwin who has been waiting at the Animal Defense League for almost two years, just waiting for someone to choose him.

Darwin was transferred to ADL from City of San Antonio Animal Care Services in May of 2023, to save him from euthanasia and because they just knew he potential. He arrived into the care of ADL with distemper, along with his sister Jackie, who has since been adopted. He is healthy now and ready to go!

“Our amazing veterinary team dedicated time and care to nurse him back to full health, and now he’s fully recovered,” said ADL staff.

Darwin can be a little shy at first, but he’s incredibly loyal and loving once has earned your trust. He’s goofy and has become a staff favorite over the last two years.

He loves treats and has mastered the agility course at ADL. He knows some other tricks as well, like sit, down, spin and stay. And he adores water!

He gets along great with other dogs but doesn’t really like cats.

“He does amazing with other dogs, just needs to get some energy out first,” said ADL staff. “He reads dog cues well and will recall when he gets too excited.”

Darwin needs a human that has experience with dogs who can keep him both mentally and physically engaged. And in return you’ll be rewarded with endless cuddles and a new best friend.

“He would do best with an active family with no kids or older kids,” said ADL staff.

He also loves treats and getting petted.

Darwin has never had a real home of his own, so he needs some time and compassion so that he can adjust then shine!. Are you ready to be his best friend?

And best of all, if you’d like to adopt Darwin there is no fee at all if you adopt him because he’s a “Diamond in the Ruff.”

“I’ve been part of the ADL family for a while now, waiting for my perfect match to find me,” said Darwin at ADL. “Since I’ve been here over four months, my adoption fee is waived—so all you need to bring is love. Could you be the one to take me home?”

Darwin is current on all vaccinations and has already been neutered.

For whoever adopts Darwin, Lucy’s Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free “Glow Up” Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy’s most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!

The ADL says this year alone they will save the lives of over 6,500 dogs and cats, many of which will require multiple specialized surgeries costing thousands of dollars. You can help by donating to their PAWS for a Cause Emergency Medical Fund, which plays a crucial role in this mission.

Maybe you’re not quite ready to adopt a dog, but still want to help out. Why not try fostering a dog. ADL will provide all of the food and supplies that you will need, and even take care of all of the medical. It’s a win-win situation for both you and the dog or cat. They get a loving home, and it doesn’t cost you a dime. CLICK HERE to become a pet foster parent.
