Daughter of Yogurt Shop Murders suspect grapples with father’s dark legacy

Authorities have identified Robert Eugene Brashers as the suspect in the 1991 Yogurt Shop Murders, bringing closure to the decades-old mystery.

AUSTIN, Texas — After more than three decades of mystery and heartbreak, authorities have identified the man responsible for the 1991 Yogurt Shop Murders, a case that has haunted the Austin community and gripped the nation for years.

Law enforcement sources confirmed to KVUE that the suspect is Robert Eugene Brashers, a man with no known ties to Austin aside from the crime itself. Brashers died by suicide in early 1999, nearly eight years after the murders took place.

The announcement has prompted a wave of reactions from the community and others affected by the case, including Brashers’ own daughter, Deborah Brashers.

Deborah, who was just 8-years-old when her father took his life, told KVUE she was devastated to learn of his involvement in this case.

“It really is hard to figure out that I come from that,” Deborah said. “But I’m my mother’s daughter, true and true, and I know what’s right and wrong.”

She described her father as intelligent and meticulous, but also deceptive and deeply troubled.

“My father was very, very, very strange,” Deborah said. “My father was a business man. My father was a con artist.

Deborah said she began uncovering the truth about her father’s past in 2018, a process that left her with many unanswered questions.

“My mother’s not here to ask all these questions,” she said. “I don’t know who I can go to to ask all these questions. I don’t know who I can trust to ask all these questions.”

Though she was only four-months-old when the yogurt shop murders occurred, Deborah expressed deep sorrow for the victims and their families.

“I’m sorry for the pain and everything that my father has put everyone through,” she said. “And I wish my father was here today to be able to be punished for his crimes.”

Deborah said while the families may not receive full justice, she hopes this development offers a step toward healing.
