De’Aaron Fox reveals he was playing Call of Duty: Warzone when he was traded to the Spurs

San Antonio Spurs’ De’Aaron Fox and Fortnite legend SypherPK headline “Game In The Park.”

SAN ANTONIO — Gaming fans packed The Rock at La Cantera, eager to see San Antonio Spurs‘ De’Aaron Fox and popular Fortnite gaming legend SypherPK take the stage inside the Alienware mobile station, ready to pick up the controller and square off in a Fortnite battle.

This was just a part of the popular “Game In The Park” hosted by the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday afternoon.

Players of all ages and skill levels were invited to attend the event and participate in free play on Alienware’s latest high-performance gaming equipment. A few lucky gamers got to enter the Alienware station and join Fox and SypherPK in a Fortnite game.

“It’s been great. We had some fans here playing Fortnite earlier, and I think that just being able to interact with people is always the big thing for me,” said Fox, an avid gamer, about an hour before the news came out he would undergo season-ending finger surgery.

Fox did have the unenviable task of taking on one of the best Fortnite players in the world, but SypherPK commended the Spurs guard for his controller skills.

“He was a little rusty on Fortnite. It was a good time and it’s always about being with the fans and just seeing their excitement of being able to interact and play with us,” he said.

Unfortunately, Fox couldn’t flex his gaming muscles on his favorite game “Dragon Ball” due to technical issues, and SypherPK admitted he “dodged a bullet.”

But just how much is gaming a part of Fox’s life?

Ironically, the 20-plus-year gamer revealed that he was informed he was getting traded to the Spurs while playing the military combat game, “Call of Duty: Warzone.”

“I was in Minnesota, and me and my friend, KJ, play the game (Warzone) a lot,” he said. “I got the call from our (Kings) assistant GM at the time, and they were letting me know that that trade was going through.”

Said Fox: “I was having a great night. A couple of 20 bombs on Warzone. It was a great night going.”

As much as Fox is competitive on the NBA court, he is equally competitive in the virtual world.

Perhaps a bit too much for his wife, Recee, a San Antonio native who attended Lady Bird Johnson High School.

“My wife doesn’t like to do it too much because she says it seems like it’s more stressful than fun, but that’s just being competitive, but it’s always fun,” he said.

Once the gaming was over, Fox and SypherPK mingled with fans in attendance.

The Fortnite legend held a meet-and-greet while Fox snapped photos with fans and gave his autograph to fans braving the hot afternoon to be a part of the event.

“I have been gaming since, honestly, since I can remember,” he said. “This is just something to get away from basketball.”
