The Decatur ISD community is mourning the loss of a McCarroll Middle School student after he was killed Saturday in an ATV accident.

DECATUR, Texas — A Decatur ISD Middle School student died Saturday following an ATV accident that injured three other children, district officials said Sunday.

Wise County Deputies responded to the ATV crash around 4:36 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29 in the 300 block of Country Road 3250, according to a press release from the Wise County Sheriff’s Office. The crash involved four people, ages 13,13, 12 and 9, officials said.

The driver said he took a sharp turn and the ATV flipped, the release states. One child, Robert “Treb” McKinnon, was taken to a hospital where he died, officials said.

In a letter to families and staff, Decatur ISD confirmed the death of McKinnon, who was a student at McCarroll Middle School.

Two people were taken to a hospital and one person was treated by Wise County Emergency Services on the scene, the release states.

“We ask that you keep the McKinnons close in your hearts and in your prayers,” the letter read. “Our school community is holding this family in love and support during an unimaginable time of grief.”

The district said that First Baptist Church provided space for students, staff and community members to gather and grieve.

Counselors will also be available at McCarroll Middle School on Monday to support students, families and staff as classes resume following the Thanksgiving break. The school’s leadership team is also meeting to coordinate additional support for the campus this week, the letter stated.
