Denise Bakkar of Fair Oaks Ranch Elementary was surprised with the KENS 5 EXCEL Award and a $2,000 check from Credit Human.

BOERNE, Texas — BOERNE- Fair Oaks Ranch Elementary School, in Boerne ISD, honors second grade teacher, Denise Bakkar, with the KENS 5 EXCEL Award.

Bakkar was moved to tears as KENS 5 and school staff honored her with the award. Mrs. Bakkar is a decorated educator, teaching with Boerne ISD for eight years now.

Bakkar was even honored as the 2025 Teacher of the Year for Boerne ISD.

With a focus on S.T.E.M. in her classroom, she also helps out with the school’s robotics team, and has worked to get dozens of grants for her campus.

Bakkar’s students were also ecstatic that their teacher, who is full of heart and secret handshakes, could be honored.

“Mrs. Bakkar is the best teacher ever, and she makes learning fun,” said Kylie, a second-grader in her class. “She really deserves this award.”

While Mrs. Bakkar faced her own challenges growing up, like being diagnosed with type one diabetes when she was nine and dyslexia, she’s turned her own challenges into teaching moments for her students.

“I think just to realize that you are capable of doing so much more than what you think,” said Ms. Bakkar. “Also, doing it in a kind manner. You have to keep, chugging.”

Mrs. Bakkar there to help her students every step of the way.

“My saying in the classroom is always life gives you lemons, you make lemonade,” said Ms. Bakkar. “So, the kids always say that, which I hope that motivates them to keep thriving.”

Mrs. Bakkar was given a $2,000 check from our partners at Credit Human, which Mrs. Bakkar says she hopes to put towards a cruise vacation for her family.
