Deputy shoots suspect after being fired upon at motel in Comfort, sheriff says

A Kendall County deputy shot a suspect after being fired upon while responding to reports of a fight and gunfire at a Comfort motel early Sunday.

COMFORT, Texas — A Kendall County deputy was involved in a shooting early Sunday morning after officials say the deputy was fired upon while responding to a disturbance at a motel in Comfort.

According to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received a call around 12:45 a.m. reporting several men fighting and shots fired in the parking lot of the Executive Inn Motel, located at 32 N. Highway 87.

A deputy arrived within minutes and was immediately met with gunfire from a subject in the parking lot, authorities said. The deputy returned fire, striking the suspected gunman.

Additional deputies from Kendall and Kerr counties, along with DPS troopers, responded to secure the scene.

Kendall County EMS treated the suspect, who was later airlifted to a San Antonio hospital in critical condition. The deputy was not injured.

The incident is being investigated as an aggravated assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon. Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public and more information will be released as it becomes available.
