
The off-duty officer witnessed the shooting and confronted the armed gunman on the street, according to Dilley PD.
SAN ANTONIO — An off-duty Dilley police officer intervened in Friday’s fatal shooting on San Antonio’s west side and detained the suspected gunman, according to an update from the Dilley Police Department.
San Antonio police said the shooting happened around 3:40 p.m. on Friday in the 2800 block of West Commerce Street. Investigators said an argument between two men at a bus stop escalated when the suspect pulled out a firearm and shot the victim multiple times.
The victim was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene of the shooting, according to SAPD.
In an update Saturday, the Dilley Police Department said one of its patrol officers was working an off-duty job in her official capacity as a Texas peace officer at a family restaurant in San Antonio when the shooting occurred.
According to Dilley PD, the officer witnessed the shooting and confronted the armed gunman on the street. Officials said she was able to detain the suspect without further incident and then attempted to render aid to the victim, requesting emergency medical services.
The suspect was turned over to San Antonio police upon their arrival.
The Dilley Police Department said the off-duty officer is a seven-month veteran of the department and is cooperating with homicide investigators.
The shooting remains under investigation.
