‘Dire’ situation at San Antonio Pets Alive! where all 3 of their locations are over capacity

Leaders say the number of animals on the euthanasia list fluctuates daily, but saving lives is their mission.

SAN ANTONIO — ‘San Antonio Pets Alive!‘ leaders are saying they are over capacity with animals at all three of their locations. They describe the situation as ‘dire’, explaining adoption and fostering can save lives.  Justine Grier is the director of animal placement. Grier says what they need is support from the community.

“There’s a lot of stray animals,” Grier said. “A lot of animals at the city shelter. All of our animals come from the city shelter.”

Grier says the number of animals on the euthanasia list fluctuates daily. But she says fostering can save lives.

“Usually it’s between about 20 or 40 animals that are at risk of euthanasia and we really try to save as many as we can, that’s our mission,” she said. “The good thing is if someone fosters they don’t only save the animal that’s in the kennel, they also save another life because getting another animal out the kennel frees up the kennel and we can really save a puppy or dog from the euthanasia list.”

She says there’s a dog for everyone.

“We do have little puppies, we do have teenager dogs, we have adult dogs, small dogs, big dogs, and even senior dogs.”

If you cannot adopt – you can sponsor.

“On August 29 we have an out of state transport coming up actually which is going to the New York area and we do need temporary fosters for those dogs, so people don’t have to commit for a very long time. It’s really just 3 weeks where they give those pups a temporary home, they take them to their upcoming medical appointments and then the pups are off to New York.”
