District 5 Councilmember Teri Castillo pushes to advance renaming of César E. Chávez Boulevard

A push to restore César E. Chávez Boulevard to its historic name, Durango Boulevard, is advancing, with community support and council backing.

SAN ANTONIO — A proposal to rename a major roadway is moving forward after District 5 Councilmember Teri Castillo filed a Council Consideration Request (CCR) to change César E. Chávez Boulevard back to Durango Boulevard, according to city officials.

City officials said the request follows what was described as an extensive community engagement effort. According to District 5 officials, 64% of all survey participants supported reverting the street name, while 79% of respondents who live along César E. Chávez Boulevard favored the change.

“Public spaces should reflect the community’s values and culture, and honor only upstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to San Antonio,” said Councilwoman Teri Castillo. She added that residents were clear in their feedback and thanked the community for participating in the process.

City officials said the street was previously renamed in 2011, and at that time, residents and business owners along the corridor were responsible for costs associated with updating addresses and signage.

To ease potential financial burdens this time, the councilmember’s request calls for the city to reallocate funding that had been designated for the Fiscal Year 2026 César Chávez March. According to city officials, those funds would instead be used to create a program to help cover expenses related to another name change, including replacing street signs.

City officials said the request also asks that the item be placed on the agenda for the next available meeting of the City’s Governance Committee.

Council members representing Districts 1, 3, 4 and 6 have signed on in support of the proposal, according to officials.

If approved through the city’s formal renaming process, the change would return the historic Durango Boulevard name to the corridor.
