Ditch the dating apps! | ‘Pitch-A-Friend’ brings a fresh take on dating to San Antonio

Pitch-A-Friend is a live matchmaking event that offers singles a refreshing alternative to dating apps.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio singles are getting a new way to meet potential matches and it doesn’t involve dating apps.

Pitch-A-Friend, a viral matchmaking event where friends take the mic to hype up their single besties, has officially arrived in the Alamo City.

The event, which started in Philadelphia, has gained traction worldwide as a fun and interactive way to bring people together.

Instead of swiping through profiles, attendees watch live presentations where friends pitch their remarkable single pals to a lively audience.

“Think like Shark Tank for friends,” said Jacqueline Rudd, host of the San Antonio chapter. “Who doesn’t want their bestie hyping them up and being like, ‘This is my friend that you should date’?”

The concept was born out of the pandemic when traditional dating took a backseat to virtual interactions.

Organizers say Pitch-A-Friend offers a refreshing alternative to online dating by encouraging face-to-face connections.

“It was a way to get people back out meeting in person,” Rudd explained. “Covid put us behind the screens for a lot longer than we wanted. Apps became the norm. This is a new way to get people back out.”

While the event welcomes all singles 21 and older, organizers have noticed a trend—women seem to be more eager to take part than men.

“We gotta get the guys to just be like, ‘Hey, I want to be pitched. I’m ready to put myself out there,’” Rudd said. “I think it’s a little bit easier for women to come up and be like, ‘Hey, let’s do this event tonight.’”

The event is also LGBTQ+ friendly and is making its way across San Antonio, popping up at different bars around the city. The next event is expected to take place in May.

“We’re hoping for our next event to be in May… We don’t know where yet but we’re hoping to bring it maybe to the north part of San Antonio,” Rudd added.

For those who are tired of ghosting, endless swiping and dating app fatigue, this could be a fun new way to spark a connection—one pitch at a time.
