Do you own property in Texas? Here’s how you can save some money

The Harris County tax assessor urges Texas homeowners to apply for property tax exemptions before the April 30 deadline.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — If you own property in Texas, then you already know that taxes can be hefty.

But, the Harris County tax assessor wants to remind homeowners about some money they can save.

There’s no catch — just paperwork.

Homeowners are running out of time — the deadline to apply for exemptions is April 30.

How it works

If you get an exemption, it removes part of the value of your property from taxation.

If your home is valued at $100,000 and you qualify for a $20,000 exemption, you would pay taxes as if your house was worth $80,000.

People over the age of 65 who are disabled are eligible for additional exemptions.

Forms are available online at hcad.org.

The tax assessor’s office is also holding free workshops where people can ask questions or get help if they owe taxes from previous years. Check the dates and times here.
