Dog arrived at Stray Rescue with an arrow in his neck; x-rays revealed something even more chilling

“Someone was hunting this puppy. They wanted him dead,” Stray Rescue of St. Louis said.

ST. LOUIS — “He was being hunted,” said Stray Rescue of St. Louis.

The animal shelter was referring to Lucky Charm, a dog it took in from East Prairie, Missouri, on Monday.

The 1-year-old mixed breed had a broken-off arrow shaft sticking out of his neck. The dog was transported from Mississippi County to Stray Rescue, where staff gave him pain medicine and sedated him for x-rays.

The scans showed the arrow was sitting near his spine and his esophagus, and they also uncovered something even more chilling—he had a bullet lodged in his abdomen.

“He’s so kind, so sweet, so gentle,” Stray Rescue said in a post to Facebook. “It enrages us to even think about how someone could be so heartless to do something like this to such a sweet soul. How could someone do this?”

He was being hunted. This dog needs ALL OF US. Our prayers, our positive vibes, our voices. He was found in East Prairie, MO. If you have any information on who did this, email us right away: Info@strayrescue.org. This one-year-old puppy was shot with a bow and arrow, and the arrow is now brutally lodged in his throat. He was transported here to the safe haven of Stray Rescue where we immediately administered pain medication. He’s so kind, so sweet, so gentle. It enrages us to even think about how someone could be so heartless to do something like this to such a sweet soul. How could someone do this? We got him settled and as comfortable as possible. In the background, you can hear anger in our staff members’ voices. Once we performed x-rays, we could clearly see that the arrow is going right through him. It is near his spine and esophagus. As if that wasn’t horrific enough, he also has a bullet lodged in his abdomen. Someone was hunting this puppy. They wanted him dead. We prepared for surgery, but discovered the arrow is piercing his trachea. This will not be easy to remove, and he needs a skilled specialist immediately. We made the call and loaded him in our medical transport Jeep. We strapped him to the gurney and tucked him in with blankets and a pillow to show him that not every human being is a monster. We sent him with love and so many kisses. Saying goodbye to him was really hard, but it’s the only chance he has, and he deserves our EVERY effort. Please send prayers and positivity his way. Please send him all your fierce love which we know he feels from near and far. We named him Lucky Charm, and we KNOW he can make it through this! With you by his side, there is no better chance in the world. We will keep everyone posted as he fights to live through this tricky surgery. Strayrescue.org/lucky-charm

“Someone was hunting this puppy. They wanted him dead,” the shelter said.

Stray Rescue said staff were preparing for surgery when they discovered the arrow was piercing his trachea and would require a specialist’s skill to remove. A video posted by Stray Rescue showed staff carefully wrapping Lucky Charm in blankets and strapping him into the back of their Jeep to be taken to a specialty surgeon.

“We sent him with love and so many kisses. Saying goodbye to him was really hard, but it’s the only chance he has, and he deserves our EVERY effort,” Stray Rescue said.

The shelter said it would be keeping everyone updated on the outcome of his surgery on its website.

Anyone with information on who shot Lucky Charm was asked to email info@strayrescue.org.
