Dog found tied in a trash bag in Waco dumpster recovering after rescue and vet care

A terrier mix named Benji is recovering after being found tied in a trash bag and thrown into a Waco dumpster.

WACO, Texas — A small terrier mix, now named Benji, is recovering after being found tied up inside a trash bag and thrown into a dumpster behind the Drug Emporium in Waco.

Store employees witnessed a man toss a large bag into a dumpster behind the Drug Emporium near Bosque Boulevard and Valley Mills Drive before driving away. Sensing something was wrong, the employees checked the bag and discovered the bloodied dog, tied and trapped inside.

Benji was promptly rescued and taken into care with the help of animal control and local rescuers. Initial fears indicated he had been shot, but veterinarians determined his injuries were the result of a violent attack by a larger dog. Though he sustained deep bruising and was covered in mud, Benji had no broken bones or spinal injuries. The three-year-old dog was given pain medication and is now resting under observation at Bee Creek Veterinary Hospital, according to the Mama Nutmeg Foundation’s Facebook post.

Benji is not microchipped or neutered, but once he fully heals, he will be vetted, neutered and adopted into a loving home.

Meanwhile, the Waco Police Department has launched an investigation. Surveillance footage reportedly captured a short, older white male driving an older model white van in the area. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact police.
