‘Dog Library’ brings joy to furry beachgoers in Maine

The town of Stockton Springs has opened a “Dog Library” at Sandy Point Beach, offering free sticks and balls for dogs to enjoy.

STOCKTON SPRINGS, Maine — Summer means more time outside not just for us but for our furry friends, too. That’s why the town of Stockton Springs has created a new addition to Sandy Point Beach.

The “Dog Library” provides free sticks and balls so that dogs can have a little fun while they are at the beach.

“He loves it. He just absolutely loves it,” Laurie Gray said of her dog. “You bring the dogs down here, and they’re playing with other dogs, and they’re playing with sticks the balls. It just makes them a happier dog.”

Gray’s dog is a rescue, and this new addition is giving him an outlet to socialize and play with other pups.

“This is a good place to bring him to get him used to other dogs,” Gray said.

George Russell, Gray’s brother, is the public works director for Stockton Springs. He said he thought it would be a good idea to create this so dogs can stay entertained when they visit.

“They can grab a stick take it down on the beach play with the stick,” Russell said. “There’s tennis balls on the bottom for them to take with them as well. They don’t need to be returned. We’ve got plenty of sticks and ample supply of tennis balls.”

It’s been a week since the Dog Library opened, but it has been a draw for dog owners.

“On an average day, there’s a lot of dogs here,” Russell said. “It’s a great feeling that I put something together, and it’s getting used.”

Dog owner Bruce Gray hopes other towns create their own “Dog Library,” too.

“I hope everyone takes off with this in their own place, and it makes it a good thing for the dogs,” Gray said.

Your four-legged friend has all summer and through into November to enjoy the dog-library at Sandy Point Beach.
