Dolly Parton Reading Program could come to Midland County

The program promotes literacy to children from birth through age four.

MIDLAND COUNTY, Texas — Midland County could soon get the Dolly Parton Reading Program.

At the Midland County Commissioners’ Court meeting on Tuesday, they received a presentation from the Literacy Coalition of the Permian Basin in collaboration with the Dolly Parton reading group on the program.

The Dolly Parton Reading Program promotes literacy to children from birth through age four. The program provides books to kids free of charge.

“Those first five years are the formative years, and so that’s the time to get a book into the hands of those youngsters to help get their brains kicked in gear and get them interested in reading,” said Midland County Judge Terry Johnson.

The program provides one book a month per child.

Judge Johnson said they’re looking at a number of children in Midland County who need books and are hoping that they will be a part of it.
