Don’t blame Rowdy: Cowboys give No. 0 to Overshown, saying it wasn’t delayed by the mascot

Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown will wear No. 0, the first player in Cowboys history to do so, the team announced Wednesday.

DALLAS — Here’s a very Cowboys offseason update for your Wednesday morning: The team has officially dispelled rumors that Rowdy, the Dallas mascot who wears No. 00, prevented one of the squad’s best young players from wearing his desired number.

Well, that mini-controversy – one of which only the Cowboys could find themselves wrapped up in – has come to a resolution.

Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown will wear No. 0, the first player in Cowboys history to do so, the team announced Wednesday.

The Cowboys posted a video of Overshown visiting a jersey production facility and wearing the first one off the presses. Overshown wore No. 0 in college at Texas and his nickname is “Agent 0.” A recent NFL rule change allowed the pros to wear No. 0, as well, but Overshown sported No. 13 in his first two seasons in Dallas.

“It’s just like when Superman put on his cape, when I put that No. 0 on, it’s really Agent 0 out there,” Overshown told DallasCowboys.com reporter Patrik Walker.

Walker in his story addressed the elephant in the room, that Jerry Jones reportedly told Overshown he couldn’t wear No. 0 because that was Rowdy’s number.

“But that was never actually true,” Cowboys reporter Patrik Walker said.

In fact, as Walker noted, Jayron Kearse was expected to wear No. 0 in 2023 but made a last-minute decision to switch to No. 1.

Now, No. 0 belongs to Overshown, who is recovering from a late season knee injury after a promising 2024 campaign.

And Rowdy, for the record, is still rocking the 00.
