‘Don’t do it, cuz’ | Family shocked after man is accused of shooting and killing his cousin on the west side

Alejandro Antonio Cruz, 29, is being charged with murder for the Sept. 13 shooting of Anthony Sanchez.

SAN ANTONIO — A man has been arrested in connection to the shooting death of a man at an apartment on the west side of San Antonio Saturday.

Police say an altercation broke out between two people that escalated and ended with one of the men shooting the other multiple times.

According to SAPD, officers were dispatched for shooting at the 900 block of San Fernando Street just before 8 a.m. on Sept. 13.

When officers arrived, they found the victim, 35-year-old Anthony Michael Sanchez, on the ground with gunshot wounds to his arm and head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the victim and the suspect, now identified as Alejandro Antonio Cruz, 29, were arguing when Cruz pulled out a gun and shot Sanchez. Cruz then ran off.

Police say the victim’s wife heard the gunshot, and came to check on him and found him with a gunshot wound to his arm, according to the affidavit. The victim told his wife to call 9-1-1, police say. Arrest paperwork says that just prior to the second gunshot the wife heard the victim refer to someone as “cuz” and he was stating something to the effect of “no don’t do it, cuz.”

When the wife returned following the second gunshot, she found the victim with a gunshot wound to his head, document say.

Police say that witnesses at the scene who know both men saw the suspect shoot the victim, retreat then return and shoot him a second time, the affidavit says.

Documents say the witnesses positively identified the suspect in a six photograph lineup as the person who shot the victim.

Cruz is facing a murder charge and remains in the Bexar County Jail as of Wednesday night with a $250,000 bond.

‘It took us all by surprise’ Family confused and shocked over the killing

Multiple family members told KENS 5, the two were cousins that had grown up with each other. They said it feels like they are losing two family members.

Sanchez was a father of six, including a one-year-old. He was described as outgoing and a family man. His stepbrother, Alberto Arocha, said he has known Sanchez for 13 years. He said he also knew the suspect well.

“We would go over there for barbeques, and they would talk to each other, hug each other. I just, there is something that is not right,” Arocha said.

Arocha said they do not know what the argument was about that led to the gunfire. He added, “It took us all by surprise.”

The family is now trying to raise funds for a funeral and to help support his children. They plan on holding a plate sale Sunday, September 21 at 11 a.m. till 3 p.m. at Tubby’s Tavern off Cupples road.

“I just want him remembered as a good soul, a good person, that would take his shirt off the back for you,” Arocha said.
