According to Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, an officer’s gun was fired while in a struggle with a suspect.
FORNEY, Texas — A Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) deputy and three juveniles were injured after “an officer’s weapon discharged” during a struggle Thursday afternoon, KCSO said.
According to KCSO, multiple law enforcement agencies responded to a neighborhood near North Forney High School around 4:27 p.m. after a call came in about roughly 200 juveniles fighting at Falcon Way and Jersey Street.
Video from a neighbor’s doorbell camera showed a crowd of teenagers walking down the street, sidewalk and through yards as officers pulled up.
“It was a lot of kids,” said Mariya Gipson, who watched the incident unfold through her doorbell camera. “It’s so loud from the kids that the camera can’t capture every piece of sound.”
Initially, KCSO said a suspect attempted to take a Forney ISD officer’s gun, causing it to go off and injure a deputy, the officer and a juvenile girl. However, Forney ISD confirmed to WFAA that none of its officers discharged any weapons during the incident and none were injured.
It’s unclear whose gun went off. According to KCSO, a deputy and three juveniles were injured from shrapnel.
“The Forney ISD officer received on-site medical attention, while the Kaufman County Deputy and the three juveniles were transported to area hospitals,” KCSO said in a corrected release. All injuries were said to be non-life-threatening, according to KCSO.
“I’m just glad it’s over,” Gipson said.
Forney ISD said it had not received the names of the teenagers involved, so could not confirm whether they were North Forney High School students. KCSO said it’s still trying to determine the total number of everyone involved.
Forney ISD police, KSCO, the Forney Police Department, Texas Rangers and Texas DPS responded and/or assisted in the investigation.
The sheriff’s office said Texas Rangers will be investigating the shooting and KCSO will investigate the struggle over the gun — charges are expected to be filed.
This is a developing situation. WFAA will update this article with the latest information.
