The famous shoes from “The Wizard of Oz” are the final piece of a auction that also includes the Wicked Witch’s hat and the hoverboard from “Back to the Future.”
DALLAS — “The Wizard of Oz” has been back on everyone’s mind lately with the release of the hugely successful “Wicked,” which has already grossed more than $378 million.
Now, super-fans of the 1939 film have a chance to own a piece of its history — but it comes at a high price.
Dorothy’s famous red slippers from the movie are going up for auction by Heritage Auctions in Dallas, despite the full auction starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, the shoes are already bidding at more than $1.1 million.
Those shoes aren’t the only prop from the film up for grabs though, as the hat worn by the Wicked Witch of the West is also being auctioned off. Bidding for that is starting at about $250,000.
Other props and mementos up for sale include Mario Puzo’s personal copy of “The Godfather Notebook,” which contains his handwritten notes for Francis Ford Copoola while they were writing the screen play for “The Godfather,” as well as Marty McFly’s hoverboard from “Back to the Future Part II.”
Half of the proceeds from the board’s sale will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
The full auction is expected to have final numbers by about 3 p.m. Saturday. It is being held both online and at Heritage Auctions’ location, 2801 W Airport Fwy Northwest.
