A stunning $2 million art pavilion inspired by monarch butterflies debuts March 3 at The Monarch San Antonio.
SAN ANTONIO — A massive new public art installation inspired by the monarch butterfly is now complete at the base of downtown’s newest luxury hotel, The Monarch San Antonio.
La Mariposa, a $2 million, three-winged pavilion filled with light, will welcome the public when the hotel opens March 3. Local artists and architectural partner Overland Partners, collaborated together to design the structure that pays tribute to the butterfly’s migration.
Organizers hope the the pavilion will become a must-see landmark for the Alamo City similar to Chicago’s iconic Bean. During the day. the stained glass reflects the surrounding landscape and by night, LED lights cast a warm glow visible from the hotel’s rooftop terrace and nearby streets. The illumination will shift seasonally and for special celebrations, giving La Mariposa an “evolving presence” in the district, according to organizers.
Organizers said testing for the three miles of LED lighting begins Dec. 31, so the structure may be visible behind secure fencing in the meantime.
The Monarch San Antonio is downtown’s newest 17-story, 200-room luxury hotel in the Hemisfair District, steps from the River Walk and the Alamo. It is owned and operated by San Antonio-based Zachry Hospitality, the property carries on the family’s century-long legacy of building in the city, standing on the site where H.B. Zachry helped shape the 1968 World’s Fair.
