Dozens join search for Dallas attorney missing near Appalachian Trail

Search crews in Georgia continue looking for Dallas attorney Charles Hosch, missing since Nov. 11. More than 50 responders and volunteers have joined the search.

DALLAS, Texas — The search for a Dallas attorney missing near the Appalachian Trail is stretching into another day in the rugged mountains of North Georgia.

Charles Hosch, 67, was last seen on Nov. 11 at the Reece Trailhead in Union County. His daughter, Julia, has been on site as helicopters, canines and drone teams sweep the area.

“Pretty much all day, helicopters, canines and drone teams,” Julia Hosch said, describing an effort that’s now drawn volunteers from around the country.

More than 50 people are working the steep, heavily forested trails on foot.

Hosch has deep ties to the area, and his family says he knows it well.

“He has been on this trail since he was an Eagle Scout, and knows it very well,” Julia said.

Hosch has been an adjunct law professor at SMU Dedman School of Lawsince 1991, but his love of the wilderness brought him back to his home state.

Union County Sheriff Shawn Dyer said Hosch planned to hike to the top of Blood Mountain and return to his vehicle, but may have been exposed to freezing temperatures overnight.

“It got down into the 20s, lower 20s here, and you risk hypothermia,” Dyer said.

The sheriff is urging hikers and hunters to come forward with tips, photos or video from the area.

He said Hosch’s experience as an Eagle Scout offers reason for optimism.

“The survival skills to be outside in the elements, it gives us a lot of hope,” Dyer said.

Julia shares that hope as search crews keep pushing through the terrain.

“If anybody could figure out a way to come home from any accident that happened on this mountain, it would certainly be Dad,” she said.

Charles is 6’1”, about 200 pounds, with white hair and glasses. He was last seen wearing khaki pants, a camel-colored sweater, and a dark green jacket.
