Dozens of SAPD officers killed in the line of duty remembered at Friday memorial ceremony

The event was attended by Mayor Ron Nirenberg and U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, among others.

SAN ANTONIO — The sound of bagpipes, a trio of police helicopters and a 21-gun salute presided over a memorial ceremony where dozens of San Antonio police officers killed in the line of duty were remembered Friday morning.

Held in the courtyard of the SAPD Training Academy, the ceremony honored more than 50 officers who took an oath to protect the seventh-largest city in the U.S. Congressman Tony Gonzales served as a featured speaker.

“It’s about us remembering those that have done so much and also remembering that we live in a pretty special place,” Gonzales said. “It’s not only about the men and women in service; it is about our families. And we live in a community filled with nothing but patriots and servants. We will always serve in some form or fashion.”

Afterwards, the names of SAPD officers killed while on the job were read out, slowly and solemnly.
