DPS: Two drivers killed, several children hospitalized after head-on crash in Grimes County

A head-on crash on SH 249 killed two drivers, Wesner Carrillo, 31, and Hugo Valderrama-Contero, 45, and injured several others, including children.

GRIMES COUNTY, Texas — Two drivers were killed early Saturday morning in a head-on crash along State Highway 249 in Grimes County, according to investigators.

The crash happened around 12:45 a.m. DPS Sgt. Justin Ruiz said a Toyota Highlander was headed eastbound on SH 249 near FM 1774 when a westbound Ford Escape crossed over the center line and into oncoming traffic, crashing head-on into the Highlander.

Both drivers died at the scene.

Officials identified the driver of the Escape as 31-year-old Wesner Carrillo of Pasco, Washington. The driver of the Highlander was identified as 45-year-old Hugo Valderrama-Contero of Spring, Texas.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: A previous version incorrectly stated that Valderrama-Contero was driving the Escape and Carrillo was driving the Highlander, based on information from DPS. This has been updated with the correct drivers and vehicles.)

A rear passenger in the Highlander suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.

A secondary crash occurred moments later when a Honda Civic struck the disabled Ford Escape. That driver was not hurt.

DPS also confirmed there were three children involved in the initial crash. It was not specified which vehicle they were in, but all three were taken to hospitals in private vehicles. They were later released.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
