Dr. Maria Cubero of Alamo Heights ISD was surprised with the KENS 5 EXCEL Award and a $2,000 check from Credit Human.
ALAMO HEIGHTS, Texas — ALAMO HEIGHTS, TX: A Spanish teacher who supports her students both in and outside the classroom, by making sure they each know they have a cheerleader in their corner, is this week’s EXCEL Award winner.
It’s easy to see why Dr. Maria Cubero won the KENS 5 EXCEL Award for Alamo Heights ISD. The award which comes with a $2,000 check from Credit Human aims to honor exceptional local educators like Dr. Cubero.
For Spanish students in Dr. Cubero’s classroom, each day starts with a “buenos dias” or “good morning” high five or hug.
Dr. Cubero has over 30 years of teaching under her belt and works daily to make sure every student grasps the language course and never gives up trying.
This day we surprised Dr. Cubero with the KENS 5 EXCEL award for her efforts in the classroom.
“I’m surprised. I didn’t expect nothing but I’m so happy that everyone knows what I’m doing in my classroom, and I want to do extra for my students,” Dr. Cubero said.
We learned what makes Dr. Cubero stand out is the connection she makes with students outside the classroom.
She does this by attending each students’ extracurricular activities, whether that be sports, the arts or academic, she goes to it all and even hangs a photo after on her wall of fame. Her husband and daughter even attending some of the events with her.
“I think that a teacher is a person that has to support the student inside the classroom and outside the classroom that’s my thing,” Dr. Cubero said.
A gesture of care which her students say resonates with them.
“She just wants all of us to do good in school and just support us in any way she can,” student, Emiliano Salas said. “It makes me want to work harder because she wants us to do our best.”
Going the extra mile inside and outside the classroom is what makes Dr. Cubero a standout teacher and the Alamo Heights ISD EXCEL award winner.
Dr. Cubero also received a $2,000 check from our partners at Credit Human. She says she’ll have to think about what she will spend it on.
