A SWISD bus carrying 33 students overturned on Loop 410, sending the driver and five students to the hospital, with the driver requiring urgent transport, SAFD says.
SAN ANTONIO — More details are emerging after a school bus crash caused major traffic delays Tuesday morning on San Antonio’s southwest side.
The crash happened around 8:15 a.m. along Loop 410 South near FM 2536, also known as Old Pearsall Road, after a Southwest Independent School District bus overturned on the access road.
According to SWISD, 33 students from Southwest Legacy High School were on board at the time of the crash. District officials said none of the students were seriously injured. The district says the bus did not have seat belts. Officials said the students were on the way to the high school when the crash occurred.
Joseph Arrington with the San Antonio Fire Department said the bus driver and five students were transported to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Several other students reported minor injuries, according to fire officials. EMS crews and school nurses were at the scene checking students as a precaution. Students were able to evacuate from the bus using the back door and emergency hatches on top of the bus.
Authorities did not say what specifically caused the bus to overturn, but said it was using an entrance ramp to Loop 410 South when it crashed. The bus was the only vehicle involved, and officials said the roads were not icy at the time.
The southbound lanes are currently closed but will reopen after crews clear the scene.
We would like to provide an update regarding the earlier bus accident involving Southwest Legacy High School students.
At this time, five students were transported for evaluation with non-life-threatening injuries. Another five students are either waiting for parent pickup or will be transported back to campus. The remaining students have been safely released to their parents.
EMS and district staff remain on site, and we continue to work closely with emergency responders to ensure all students are cared for.
We are thankful that no life-threatening injuries were reported among our students, and we continue to keep our bus driver in our thoughts as they receive medical care.
We appreciate the patience and cooperation of our families as we worked through this situation. Additional updates will be shared if needed.
