Driver charged with intoxication manslaughter after Houston-area couple killed in weekend crash

John Nathan Dool, 40, was arrested after the Sunday evening crash that killed Curtis Van Deist, 80, and Catherine Van Deist, 66.

HOUSTON — The driver blamed for a deadly weekend crash on West Lake Houston Parkway has been charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter. 

The crash happened south of Kingwood on Sunday, July 13, at approximately 5:45 p.m.

According to the Houston Police Department, John Nathan Dool, 40, was heading westbound at a high rate of speed on West Sam Houston Parkway in a white Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Curtis Van Diest, 80, and his wife, Catherine Van Diest, 66, were in a white Cadillac XT5 heading northbound on Magnolia Cove Drive. When they pulled out of a stop sign at the intersection of West Lake Houston Parkway, Dool slammed into them, according to HPD. 

Dool’s pickup pushed the victim’s vehicle several feet before crashing into a pole and turning over on its side.

The victims died at the scene. According to her Facebook page, Catherine was a substitute teacher in Humble ISD.

Dool was taken to an area hospital to be treated for injuries. Tests showed he was impaired. 

The investigation is ongoing.
