Driver critically injured after crash involving 18-wheeler in southwest San Antonio, police say

A man is in critical condition after his car collided with an 18-wheeler on San Antonio’s southwest side on Friday afternoon, police said.

SAN ANTONIO — A man was hospitalized in critical condition after a crash involving an 18-wheeler on the city’s southwest side, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

Police said the collision happened around 5:35 p.m. on Friday in the 9000 block of New Laredo Highway.

According to SAPD, the 22-year-old man was driving a Honda southwest on New Laredo Highway when a semi-truck traveling northeast in the opposite direction encountered slowing traffic ahead. The driver of the 18-wheeler told officers that a vehicle in front of him began to reduce speed and come to a stop.

Police said the semi-truck driver applied the brakes and attempted to steer away to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of him. In doing so, the truck struck the Honda traveling in the opposite direction.

The 22-year-old driver was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, according to officials.

The driver of the 18-wheeler remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police said the crash remains under investigation.
