A traffic stop initiated by an officer with the Seguin Police Department turned deadly when after a lengthy standoff with law enforcement to get the driver of the vehicle to comply with authorities. Shots were fired between law enforcement and the driver, which resulted in his death, according to the Seguin Police Department.
An officer attempted to pull over a white Suzuki SX4 near North State Highway 123 Bypass and Mockingbird Lane on Thursday, March 9 at 1:46 a.m. The vehicle was pulled over at South Milam and Live Oak when the officer tried to conduct a traffic stop. Two passengers complied with commands, however, the driver of the vehicle remained non-compliant with police, authorities said.
At some point during the exchange, the passengers of the vehicle informed officers that the driver was in possession of a firearm. Further attempts to negotiate with the driver were made before sending for Guadalupe SWAT around 3 a.m., said Community Engagement Officer Sarah Wallace with the Seguin Police Department.
After continued negotiations, gas was deployed to get the driver to cooperate and eventually led to an exchange of gunfire between the driver and law enforcement around 4:43 a.m. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations into the incident are being conducted by the Seguin Police Department Criminal Investigation Division and the Texas Rangers.
The name of the deceased is not available at this time, but officials with the police department will update the public as more information is learned.
