Drivers now navigating new “diverging diamond interchange” at Blanco Road and Loop 1604

Officials say drivers should use caution as they adjust to the new pattern.

SAN ANTONIO — Drivers on the far north side will notice a big change this week after a new traffic pattern opened over the weekend at Blanco Road and Loop 1604.

The Texas Department of Transportation has shifted the intersection into a “diverging diamond interchange,” or DDI, a design that temporarily shifts traffic on Blanco Road to the left side of the road when crossing Loop 1604.

The change comes amid a full weekend closure of the intersection. According to TxDOT, the new setup is a key step in the ongoing construction project and will allow crews to move into the final phase, with completion expected by late summer 2026.

Here’s what drivers can expect with the new traffic flow:

  • Traffic on Blanco Road will shift to the left when crossing Loop 1604
  • Through traffic on Loop 1604 frontage roads must use the bypass lanes
  • Temporary traffic signals will be in operation
  • Barriers will be installed to allow for construction of concrete islands
  • Pedestrian access may be limited
  • Weeknight closures will continue as needed

TxDOT says the design is meant to improve traffic flow and safety once construction is complete, but drivers should use caution as they adjust to the new pattern. For more information about the “diverging diamond interchange” or how the traffic flow will work, click here.
