TORNILLO, Texas — A drug sniffing dog found some foil-wrapped bundles of drugs hidden inside the wheel well of a truck being driven in from Mexico by an American woman.
Officers from U.S. Customs and Border Protection working at the Marcelino Serna port of entry in Tornillo found the alleged cocaine on May 9.
The over 28 pounds of cocaine were in 14 foil-wrapped bundles hidden inside the truck. The 2013 Nissan Tundra was being driven by a 25-year-old American woman, officials say.
Her truck was selected for a secondary exam by CBP. A drug sniffing dog was used to search the vehicle and alerted the officers to the presence of illegal narcotics hidden inside both the wheel well and the dashboard of the truck. The contents of the packages tested positive for cocaine.
“This is a significant amount of cocaine that did not reach its intended destination,” said CBP Marcelino Serna Port Director Eric Fernandez. “Every drug load that CBP stops plays a role in keeping our communities and neighbors safe.”
The drugs were seized and the driver was arrested by CBP officers and turned over to the Texas Department of Public Safety to face state charges associated with the failed smuggling attempt.
