Early morning fire at north-side SA homeless camp scorches multiple vehicles, officials say

Officials say six to seven vehicles caught fire as well of a number of scrap and debris. Firefighters were able to knock down the bulk of the fire.

SAN ANTONIO — Six to seven vehicles caught fire early Thursday morning after flames broke out at a north-side homeless camp, according to officials.

Firefighters arrived to heavy smoke at a homeless camp located at 66 Haby Drive around 2:10 a.m. The camp was located behind an auto shop and Alamo City Public Works.

Officials say six to seven vehicles caught fire as well as a number of scrap and debris. Firefighters were able to knock down the bulk of the fire but not before it encroached one of the nearby buildings. The fire did not catch at the building, however.

Fire officials tell us one issue with fire-fighting in cold weather is high winds. They say a front moving in can cause a fire to spread rapidly.

As far as hydrants go, SAFD says they do not have issues with hydrants freezing like they do in the northern parts of the country.

No injuries were reported. Public works were called out to bulldoze the debris.
