East-side house fire claims lives of several parakeets, officials say

The two people who live at the home were not there at the time of the fire. In addition, a turtle was rescued from the home.

SAN ANTONIO — A fire at an east-side home left several parakeets dead, according to officials.

San Antonio fire officials were called to the 300 block of Leonidas Drive just after 10 a.m. Friday for a fire.

When they arrived, they found a fire coming from the front of the home. The fire affected the front entryway as well as one bedroom. Officials were able to knock down the fire quickly.

Two people who live at the home were not there at the time. However, officials say three parakeets did not survive the fire. One turtle was also rescued.

Officials say a lot of factors posed challenges for firefighters and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The house is not a total loss, but officials say the occupants are going to need alternate living arrangements.
