East-side neighborhood fighting against new tire problem following porta potty issues

City records indicate the new neighbors that moved into the commercial parcel already have three code citations pending.

SAN ANTONIO — An east-side neighborhood that previously fought to get portable toilets flushed from their area is now fighting a new battle.

People who fought hard to flush a porta potty business out of their neighborhood say now it’s tires and the threat of mosquitoes. City records indicate the new neighbors that moved into the commercial parcel already have three code citations pending in the 3400 block of Belgium Lane.

“Not only did we get rid of porta potties, now we have the smell of dead animals because of the water,” neighbor Jesse Medeles said. “None of the people in this community can go out because they could get bit by mosquitoes.”

These neighbors from the United Homeowners Improvement Association have documents from Development Services saying Conlan Tire is operating without a certificate of occupancy, they don’t have a scrap tire license, and they have no permit for shipping containers on the premise.

“They don’t have a certificate of occupancy, so they’re not even supposed to be functioning right now!” Medeles said. “What do they do? They don’t listen to the city.”

A code spokesman says no violations have been issued yet – just citations. The company was given 14 days to correct the issues and if they’re making progress, they may get an extension to come into compliance.

KENS 5 called the company and asked for a comment. We’re still waiting for a response.

The neighbors met Friday night to talk about these issues.  Denise Hernandez-Borrego, who is the Director of Policy for City Council District 2 assured the group they will be monitoring the case as it moves forward to ensure their concerns are addressed.
