East Texas man gets 50 years for using Facebook to have sex with children

Rumbaugh said he had sex with young children before. The DA’s Office said they haven’t been able to identify these victims yet.

GILMER, Texas — An Upshur County man was sentenced to 50 years in prison Thursday for contacting children through Facebook in attempt to have sex with them. 

Gary Kenneth Rumbaugh, 57, pleaded guilty to online solicitation of a minor under 14 years old in the 115th District Court in Gilmer on Thursday. He was then sentenced to 50 years in prison.

According to the Upshur County District Attorney’s Office, while was 55 years old living in his mother’s home, Rumbaugh contacted several young children via Facebook messenger, including one child who was 12 years old, while the kids were in school.

He also invited a 12-year-old to his home by giving them his exact address and he also invited the child to the Gladewater Park by enticement, the DA’s Office said. 

Rumbaugh told the child that he had sex with children around their age before. The DA’s Office said they haven’t been able to identify these victims yet. 

“I would like to personally thank the Gladewater Police Department for thoroughly investigating this case,” Upshur County District Attorney Billy Byrd said.
