East Texas officials search for person who captured, killed alligator

East Texas wardens search for the person who reportedly captured, killed, and dumped an alligator last week. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office posted about the alligator in a Facebook post on Saturday, May 18, stating the incident likely occurred late Friday or early Saturday.

The Shelby County Game Wardens found the alligator at the Pinkston boat ramp on County Road 1211 located in Shelby County, which is near the Texas and Louisiana border by Nacogdoches.

Officials are seeking information on the person who may be responsible. Game wardens ask those with information to call Game Warden Sam Anderson or Austin Cryer at 936-332-8487 or 936-591-7265.

In Texas, it’s not illegal to hunt alligators, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. However, hunters must have a TPWD permit or tag. Those with tags can only hunt during the open season for alligators from September 10 to September 30 in core counties and from April 1 to June 30 in non-core counties.

Shelby County is a non-core county. The bag limit in non-core counties is one alligator per person per license year. Alligators can not be taken during this season on any property where alligators were taken during the September season.

Upon killing an alligator in a non-core county, a person must immediately affix a wildlife resource document to the alligator, which shall accompany the alligator until it is permanently tagged with a CITES tag.
